How to Choose A Prosthetist: An Open Letter To Amputees

Dear Patients:
Choosing the best prosthetist and components for your prosthesis can be tricky decisions. A successful outcome of designing and fitting a new prosthesis is very subjective. As a practicing prosthetist for more than 30 years I’ve seen that each person has unique factors that are theirs alone, as well as other aspects that pertain to many amputees. MORE

“Bruce was by FAR the most knowledgeable and CARING prosthetist I've ever encountered. Both him and his staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well taken care of. I walked in with a HUGO and left with a Lamborghini. Highly recommend!!!!” — Joseph C.

At Progressive Orthotics of Selden for his follow up with owner/prosthetist Bruce Goodman, Joe says, "It's as close to having my real leg as I've ever had. It doesn't feel like a prosthetic. It feels like it's part of me. It moves that way. It’s a completely different experience.”

Joe’s custom prosthesis is manufactured with a carbon fiber and nylon impregnated acrylic socket. There is a flexible inner socket, which is a silicone-based flexible plastic. The prosthesis is suspended by a silicone suspension liner by Ossur and shuttle lock by American Prosthetics. The foot is a combination of carbon and graphite, which is lightweight and very energy-efficient, called “The Triumph” manufactured by Trulife. At heel strike it stores energy and at toe off it releases it, creating a very efficient and uniform gate.

“I was nervous after my amputation, not knowing what would come next. Bruce and Ken were able to keep me informed, saw me frequently and got up and going. They always made themselves available to me and treated me with respect and care, making the process as smooth as possible. I can't believe how fast I got my leg. I'm now wearing it all day and walking long distances with no help.
Highly recommend! — William K.

“…Bruce Goodman is an artisan who takes pride in his craft. My husband described him as the architect who designs the proper build of support for your body. Bruce Goodman genuinely delights in helping people get up and go!....” —Jean L.
